Monday's trivia answer

The world's highest mountain is Mauna Kea on Hawaii's Big Island. Although its peak  is just 13,803 feet above mean sea level, the mountain is 33,476 feet above its base on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. That makes it taller than Mount Everest,  which is the highest mountain above sea level at 29,029 feet.

Rare Star Trek items are now on display at the new McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord, N.H. The center is also telling the real history behind the eternally popular series.
A uniform, worn by Chief Engineer Janice Rand, played by Grace Lee Whitney, in Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979) is on display, as well as chairs from the set of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987-1994). The items were purchased at the October 2006 “40 Years of Star Trek” Auction at Christie’s in New York. Fans can not only see the memorabilia but sit in chairs actually used by Captain Jean Luc Picard and crew.

What's in a pronunciation?

Why is it that we pronounce Des Moines as DEH Moine but Des Plaines as DEZ Plaines? Just one of life's mysteries, I guess. (Then again, if we pronounced it DEH Plaine, it might sound like the opening of TV's "Fantasy Island.")
