Listen up: It's time to buy a passport

My favorite stamp in my passport

Passport rules change in 16 days, so don't say we didn't warn you. Come June 1, no mattter whether you return to the United States by air, land or sea, you are going to need a passport or other acceptable document. We'll get to those alternative documents shortly, but take our advice and make life simpler and less stressful by spending $75-$100 for a passport.

With a passport, you will know that you are covered for re-entering (or entering) the U.S. and for visiting most other countries (although a few also require a visa). But if you insist, and are traveling only by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region, and Bermuda, a passport card, costing $25-$50, is allowed. And no matter how they are traveling, children under 16 can present the original or copy of their birth certificate, or other proof of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate or citizenship card. There are other allowable documents for specific groups such as people in the military and native Americans.

Fairies, leprechauns and a handsome castle

Ashford Castle, in County Mayo, Ireland, is presenting a two-night family program titled "The Myths of Ashford Castle: Fairies & Leprechauns." Things begin in the drawing room, where a local historian tells children a tale about those self-same fairies and leprechauns. Children are then given a special leprechaun hat to wear throughout the day, and the group sets off for a treasure hunt in search of a pot of gold, eventually finding one filled with gold-covered chocolate coins. All children receive a four-leaf clover shamrock necklace and a book on Ashford Castle's myths. The day ends with hot chocolate in the drawing room. The package, for about $1,333, includes two nights 'accommodation in a deluxe queen room with two queen beds for two adults and two children (under age 12 ), with breakfast included.

What's in a pronunciation?

The name Pedro is pronounced PAYdro, yet Californians pronounce the city of San Pedro as San PEEdro.
